Funded by the Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance and Swiss Federation, the document seeks to foster not only a culture of inclusivity and gender equality, but have also to lay a robust foundation for transformative change within the institution.
DCAF is dedicated to making states and people safer through more effective and accountable security and justice. Since 2000, the Centre has facilitated, driven and shaped security sector reform (SSR) policy and programming around the world.
At the closing ceremony, Hulay Jallow, Deputy Director General of GID, reminded participants of their collective efforts during the session, noting that the review and validation of the sexual harassment and gender equality policies, represent a significant milestone in their journey towards creating a safe, respectful and equitable environment.
“These policies not only reflect our steadfast dedication to upholding the fundamental rights and dignity of every member of our department, but also serves as a treatment to our firm resolve to align with international human rights standards.”
She revealed that the development of draft gender action plan informed by the invaluable insights gleaned from the GID scoping study on gender equality, reaffirm the institution`s proactive stance in addressing gender related challenges and fostering meaningful progress.
“By translating recommendations into tangible actions, we are poised to effect tangible and sustainable change that will resonate across every facet our department.” she declared.
Moving forward, Madam Jallow advised participants to remain steadfast in their commitment to implementing the policies and action plan that they precisely crafted.
Ken Isaac, DCAF head of office in The Gambia, said DCAF seeks to enhance the effectiveness, accountability and transparency of security sector governance in The Gambia.
“Our journey together began with the recognition of the need for comprehensive reform to address the complex challenges facing the security sector.” he said.
He informed that ever since, DCAF has worked closely with the GID and other security institutions to implement policies and practices that aligned with international best practices while being sensitive to the unique context of The Gambia.
That, he said, includes the development and implementation of training programmes, establishment of regulatory frameworks, and the promotion of interagency collaboration.
“One of our most significant areas of focus has been the promotion of gender equality, and the protection of vulnerable groups within the security sector.” he said.
Commissioner Mariama Nyang, head of Immigration in the West Coast Region commended DCAF for the initiative.
“DCAF`s dedication to promoting human security and upholding international human rights standards including gender equality is truly commendable and deeply appreciated.” she said.
She said that participants at the forum have also carefully selected recommendations from the GID scooping study on gender equality, which she added, will serve as the foundation of GID`s gender action plan.
