The campaign reflects the association’s dedication to equipping students with essential financial knowledge and preparing them to make informed decisions in the banking and financial sectors.
Besides, the campaign also seeks to bridge the knowledge gap between students and the banking sector, while empowering them to better understand the significance of banking, savings, responsible borrowing, and financial planning.
The GBA delegation, comprising senior executives of the association visited several schools across The Gambia, including Gambia High, St. Joseph’s and St. Augustine’s Senior Secondary Schools.
Giving an insight into the event, Isatou Jawara, president of the GBA, highlighted the pivotal role of banking in everyday life, emphasising that its impact extends far beyond mere money management.
“Banking is not just about saving money, it is integral in fostering economic stability and growth. Through lending, investment, and savings, banks enable individuals and businesses to reach their full potential.” she noted.
Jawara also pointed out that banks play a vital role in facilitating commerce, supporting entrepreneurs, and making capital available for projects that drive job creation and improved living standards.
She further highlighted the importance of financial discipline as a core component of financial literacy.
“It's not enough to know how to save or invest. Financial discipline involves making thoughtful decisions about spending, prioritizing savings, and avoiding impulsive purchases.” she added.
Pa Alieu Ndow, Executive Secretary of GBA, revealed that the association had visited 13 schools within Region One to create awareness and provide students with insights into banking careers.
“We are engaging these young minds because they are the future leaders who will eventually take up the mantle when we retire.” he said.
Bakary Ceesay, Director of the Regional Education Directorate One, expressed appreciation with the initiative undertaken by the association.
He lauded the association for guiding students interested in banking careers and providing them with an understanding of the banking system.
“This initiative offers students career development opportunities while educating them on the importance of savings, investment, and financial management.” Ceesay noted.
Abdoulie Njie, head of Information Technology at Gambia Senior Secondary School, on behalf of the school's principal, thanked the GBA for their foresight and dedication in sharing valuable knowledge with the students.
