The late renowned scholar, Serigne Bamba was a Sufi Saint and religious leader in Senegal. He founded the large Mouride Brotherhood movement (the Muridiyya) and was known for producing poems and tracts on meditation, rituals, work, and Quranic study.
He led a pacifist struggle against French imperialism in this part of Africa, travelling across the Atlantic Ocean, while not waging outright war on the French like several other prominent figures.
With millions of followers across the globe, every year, thousands of Muslims around the world make a pilgrimage to old city of Touba (known as the Magal), worshipping at the mosque and honouring the legacy of this great Islamic scholar, Ahmadou Bamba.
Speaking to The Point, Jewring Jobe, disclosed that this year's celebration is special, as it marks 100 years since the passing of the Muslim legend.
"100 years is not 100 days, and knowing Serigne Touba, one would know it’s important to celebrate this special day. We have used the day to pray for peace in both countries and for the successful rainy season."
He mentioned that two buses and eight mini-vans, carrying more than 100 Gambian followers, have left to join the commemoration in Senegal.
To that end, he expressed gratitude to all their sponsors including, Pape Saine, co-founder of The Point newspaper, for their generous support.
