
Conducted in partnership with the National Environment Agency (NEA), the initiative was in fulfillment of Africell Impact Foundation which was also described as one of the Company’s core pillars to ensure the protection of the natural environment.
The event also witnessed a pledge of D200, 000 by Africell Chief Executive Officer, Hussain Diab to the Swalloss (Kaffo), an entertainment and drumming group in Sanyang.
At the event, Hussain Diab, Africell Chief Executive Officer (CEO) revealed that during this Silver Jubilee, the Company will overall, plant 25, 000 trees for 25 years of impact, out of which they have already planted 1, 250 in addition to the ones planted at Sanyang village.
CEO Diab noted that in as much they are at work with the communities, he said they are also engaged in the areas of health, economy, social welfare, education and sports among a host of others.
This, he said, are all facets of their Impact Foundation, further describing mangrove forest as climate heroes.
Speaking on behalf of the National Environment Agency, Lamin Jawneh, lamented the country’s depleting forest cover, which he said, was affected by inhabitants of the local communities, who initially cut mangroves for garden fencing or fire wood.
However, he reminded that their role is to restore the country’s environment by plating mangroves and further creating awareness for the villagers to know the impacts of mangroves on the environment.
He said they work with an association in the community to effectively take up full responsibility of the site for the protection and maintenance of the planted mangroves.
Modu N. Sanneh, a resident of Sanyang, also thanked Africell and partners for what he described as ‘laudable initiative.’
