Beakanyang trains 40 human rights club coordinators

Beakanyang, a national human rights organization recently concluded a three-day workshop on human rights for forty of its club coordinators drawn from across the country.

Speaking at the closing ceremony held at Baobab Hotel, executive director of Beakanyang, Nfamara Jawneh commended the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNOHCHR), UNDP and UN Peacebuilding Fund for supporting the training.

According to him, during the three days, participants were equipped with knowledge, skills and tools to advance human rights education in schools.

He reaffirmed his organisation’s commitment to promoting human rights while calling for more investment in human rights education and training across the board.

“As teacher coordinators, we believe if you are empowered with the requisite knowledge, that will help us realize our goal of bringing human rights education to the doorstep of every Gambian,” he said.

Maimuna Manneh, national project officer at UNOHCHR urged participants to put the knowledge acquired from the training into good use.

Basiru Bah, senior legal officer for research at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) applauded Beakanyang for the successful training.

He hailed the initiative of training teacher coordinators, saying it would make great impact in building human rights culture in the country.

“The NHRC is pleased to be associated with this important training of human rights educators,” he said.

Abubacarr Jallow on behalf of the participants thanked the organisers of the training for imparting knowledge to them.

He promised that the knowledge they gained from the training would help them to effectively run their clubs while effectively educating children about their rights.

Other speakers included Justin Haccius, Project Coordinator at the UNDP who reaffirmed his office’s support to promoting human rights education in the country.

At the end of the training, participants were awarded certificates for their participation and were also given copies of Universal Declaration of Human Rights for their respective schools.
