According to his medical report, “Mamat was first presented 7 years ago with bilateral poor vision since childhood. His poor vision has been progressively and painlessly decreasing. His poor vision is markedly obvious at night and in relatively poorly lighted environment.”
Mr Njie's review of systems was unremarkable and had no family history of similar eye condition. He is also said to have had several interventions, medical and traditional without significant improvement and as such is referred for low vision and visual rehabilitation overseas.
The medical report from Sheikh Zayed Regional Eye Care Center most recent examination revealed an unaided visual acuity of hand movement in both eyes, vision in the right only improved to 1/60 with 200DS-2.50DS×180. The anterior segments in both eyes were essentially normal except for bilateral lenticular opacities.
Further examination also showed that Mamat’s bilateral pale disc is with widespread hyperpigmented bony spicule lesions. He was managed as a case of retinitis pigmentosa.
Mr Njie told The Point Newspaper that he is a father of two children and has been struggling with his sight for over 15 years.
He therefore appealed for assistance from Government, NGOs, the private sector, philanthropists and individuals to go for oversees treatment to regain his failing sight.
"I sell scrap metals to feed my family but now my sight has worsened making it difficult for me work and feed my family,” he said.
