A woman (name withheld) on the 15th May , 2024, was convicted and sentenced to a fine of D1,000 in default to serve two months imprisonment for attempting to steal a mobile phone of a patient who was admitted at Ndeban Hospital. This followed her plea of guilt. Magistrate Touray of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court told the convict that the offence with which she was charged attracts ten years imprisonment.

Following her plea of guilt, Prosecutor Jallow told the court that the convict went to the Ndeban Hospital and attempted to steal the mobile phone plugged at the patient’s ward. He stated that while she attempted to take away the phone, she was apprehended by a police officer, Ebou Jarju, who was posted at the hospital. The said police officer then took her to Bakau Police Station where she was charged for the offence.

“Why did you go to the hospital and attempted to steal the mobile phone?” the presiding magistrate asked her.

“I don’t know what took me there. I have no patient there,” the convict told the court.

“Are you married?” the magistrate questioned her.

“I am divorced. I sell charcoal. I am renting and I have seven children. I beg the court to forgive me,” she pleaded.
