The Association of Non-Governmental Organisations in The Gambia (TANGO) has expressed deep concern over the growing use of inflammatory remarks and divisive rhetoric by public figures, political actors, and other influential voices ahead of the December 2026 elections.

In a statement, TANGO warned that such conduct undermines social cohesion, heightens political tensions, and threatens the peaceful environment necessary for credible and inclusive elections.

The umbrella body for civil society organisations emphasized that The Gambia’s strength lies in its diversity, peaceful coexistence, and traditions of tolerance and mutual respect. It therefore condemned all forms of hate speech, tribal incitement, disparaging rhetoric, and ethnic stereotyping.

TANGO urged political actors, public officials, community leaders, media practitioners, and citizens to exercise restraint and responsibility in their public engagements. It called for issue-based campaigning focused on policies, programmes, and solutions to national challenges rather than personal attacks or divisive language.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate with stakeholders in fostering a peaceful electoral environment. It appealed to all Gambians to put unity and stability above political differences and to ensure that the 2026 elections are conducted through respectful debate and democratic engagement.
