A man, Bakary Jawo, suspected to have allegedly drugged a 26-year-old lady to death, was yesterday remanded at Mile 2 Central Prison.

The death of Aja Majula Hydra was reported by the police that she died after consuming an unknown tablet at Dunas Night Club in Senegambia.

Principal Magistrate Isatou Sallah Mbai of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, also ordered the transfer of the said  case to the high court as her court lacks the jurisdiction to proceed with the case.

According to the indictment  filed before  the  court, the accused  was  charged  with  murder contrary to section  187 of the Criminal  Code Cap 10:01 Volume 3 laws of  The  Gambia.

The Prosecution alleged  that the accused  Bakary Jawo, on or about 22 June 2024 at Dunas Night Club in Palma Rima, Kanifing Municipality, “willfully and knowingly  caused the death” of one Aja  Majula Hydra,  26, by putting drug substance in her water bottle, which she drank.

Police prosecutor Sub-Inspector Kebbeh, who appeared for the Inspector General of Police,  told the court that “the offence the accused  is charged with is a capital  offence.” He applied that the case be transferred to  the Special Criminal Division at High Court and be remanded at the Mile 2 Central Prison pursuant to Legal Notice 3, sections 62 and 208A of the Criminal Procedure Code.

In her ruling, Magistrate Sallah Mbai granted the application sought by the prosecutor, saying that her court “lacks the jurisdiction to hear the case” and also ordered the accused to be remanded by virtue of section 208A of the Criminal Procedure Code.
