This award, which was resuscitated in 2020, annually recognises a Gambian selected by a committee for significant achievements and contributions to the country over the past year.
Abubacarr Jawara, the 31st winner of the award initiated by Swaebou Conateh, expressed his delight, stating that, despite numerous accolades, this recognition is particularly significant since both the first and current presidents have previously received it, underscoring its importance to the country.
“I dedicate this award to my late brother, Hajie Jawara, who took me to Angola when I was just 18 and played a crucial role in shaping the person I am today. I also extend my gratitude to the president for creating an environment that allows businesspeople to thrive and for permitting us to work freely without interference,” he expressed.
Mr. Jawara further emphasised that thanks to the conducive business environment fostered by the government, he has been able to expand his business operations to over eight African countries. Notably, his company became the first since 1926 to venture into black sand mining, among other achievements.
Hon. Seedy Njie highlighted that Jawara has selflessly shared his resources with the elderly, the vulnerable, and the less fortunate. His dedication to national development is widely recognised, culminating in his recent acknowledgement by The Standard newspaper with the Man of the Year Award.
“Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Jawara addressed a critical need for basalt imports when the government faced potential shortages. He invested millions in a project to ensure the importation of 60,000 metric tons of basalt monthly, which helped stabilise prices in the market,”
Hon. Njie further outlined that Jawara’s commitment to providing basalt at a reduced price of D89,000 further reflects his dedication to the welfare of Gambians, impacting households directly and the welfare and development of communities throughout The Gambia, particularly in religious and social aspects.
He said beyond Mr. Jawara’s contributions to food security, he supports various sectors including health, education, and infrastructure. “His philosophy of sharing aligns with his belief that the primary objective of leadership is serving the people.”
Further, Mr Jawara’s daughter, Nakari Jawara, expressed pride in her father's achievements and encouraged everyone to celebrate his contributions to The Gambia and Africa.
“He’s deeply grateful for the acknowledgement and recognition for his effort in business, philanthropy, and economic home growth. As the CEO of GACH Global, my father believes in the power of innovation, collaboration to create positive change. His journey has been one of resilience and dedication not to only uplift his company, but to elevate others,” she expressed.
Ms Jawara also expressed how passionate her father is about giving to others and uplifting communities. And I believe that this award is a testament for that commitment. This honor is not just for him, it’s for all Gambians, it’s for everybody that supported him along the way, and it’s for everybody that believes in the potential of Africa.
