According to ECOMIG, the rotation and relief-in-line of troops are conducted in accordance with established ECOWAS peace support arrangements and are aimed at ensuring continuity, operational readiness and the sustainability of the mission.
The mission explained that previous ECOMIG rotations have similarly involved the replacement of personnel who had completed their prescribed tour of duty with new personnel.
“ECOMIG therefore wishes to emphasize that the ongoing rotation of the Senegalese contingent is not related to, nor occasioned by, the forthcoming elections in The Gambia,” the mission stated.
It said the movement of the incoming personnel is “strictly a routine relief-in-line of troops” carried out in accordance with the mission’s established deployment cycle.
The clarification comes as the movement of the Senegalese contingent has generated public commentary and speculation over its possible connection to the country’s upcoming electoral period.
ECOMIG urged the public and media to exercise caution when reporting on its activities, calling on them to rely on verified information and avoid speculation or misinformation regarding the purpose of the current troop rotation.
The mission also expressed appreciation to the Government and people of The Gambia for their continued cooperation and support.
ECOMIG reaffirmed its commitment to carrying out its mandate in accordance with the principles guiding the ECOWAS peace support mission.
