Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has recommended to members of the government concerned, in the Council of Ministers to preserve the resources of the sea, protect professionals in artisanal fishing, revise the code of maritime fishing and monitor its application rigorously.

“The President of the Republic underlined […] the imperative to strengthen the measures to combat illegal fishing activities,” reports the Minister of Vocational Training and government spokesperson, Amadou Moustapha Njekk Sarré.

“The Head of State asked the government to take all necessary measures to preserve fisheries resources and protect artisanal fishing professionals. To do this, he called for the revision of the Maritime Fisheries Code and its rigorous application,” adds Mr Sarré in the press release from the Council of Ministers.

Bassirou Diomaye Faye “underlined […] the imperative to strengthen the mechanisms to combat illegal fishing activities”.

According to the same source, it is an ''emergency'' for the Head of State to tackle ''the definition of a national policy for the sustainable management of fishery resources, through a specific program involving researchers and well-targeted partners.

Renewal and security of fleet of artisanal canoes

President Faye welcomed the publication, last Monday, by the Minister of Fisheries, Maritime and Port Infrastructure, of the list of vessels authorised to fish in waters “under Senegalese jurisdiction”.

Government, the source further stated, is concerned about a “census and [an] evaluation of State interventions, subsidies and financing in the fisheries sector in terms of infrastructure created and support for stakeholders”.

President Faye had asked them to ensure the renewal and security of the fleet of artisanal canoes.

''The President of the Republic invited the Prime Minister to engage in consultations with stakeholders in the fishing sector in order to define an emergency program for the revival of artisanal fishing and the development of industrial fishing,'', notes Mr Sarré.

He adds that President Faye spoke of “the need to develop aquaculture, a source of jobs, by networking the national territory into aquaculture centers and stations”.

Furthermore, the Senegalese security agents have also confiscated millions of counterfeit CFA and arrested many people  in connection with the drug kush and expired medicines, according to media reports.
