In a powerful appeal during a dialogue session held yesterday by International IDEA, Sheikh Essa Darboe, President of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council, urged Gambians to embrace truth, respect, and unity as guiding principles in the upcoming elections.

Sheikh Darboe emphasised that religious leaders carry a special responsibility to use their platforms for peace rather than division. “Our leader always advises us to speak the truth, to speak good words, to respect others. These are the principles we must follow during this election process,” he advised.

He warned against hate speech, personal attacks, and misinformation, noting that politics should not be an excuse to abandon moral and religious values. “Sometimes we think that during politics you can do everything. But when you say bad things or what is not true, you are just a politician. Allah is counting us,” he reminded all and sundry.

The Sheikh Darboe calls on imams, pastors, and other faith leaders to continue preaching peace and national unity, stressing that their role is vital in sensitizing communities and preventing the misuse of religious platforms for political gain.

Civil society organisations were also urged to help citizens understand the electoral process to avoid conflict born of misunderstanding. “Your role is very important, to make people understand the political process and the rules,” he said.

The media, he added, must remain vigilant against misinformation and focus on disseminating accurate information that strengthens democracy.

The Most Reverend Bannie Ebenezer Fanazer Manga echoed similar sentiments, reminding Gambians of the words of the national anthem and pledge. “It is possible to live in peace. Our coat of arms calls us to strive for peace, progress, and prosperity,” he stated.

Both leaders stressed that credible, peaceful elections are achievable if citizens commit to rejecting hate and embracing unity. They encourage Gambians to delete negative messages on social media rather than spread them, noting that peace requires both prayer and action.

“As Gambians, after the election we will continue living together as one people. Let us act, speak, and pray for peace,” Sheikh Darboe concluded.
