The director general of the Public Utilities Authority (PURA), Yusupha Jobe and the director of Finance Paul Mendy, have clarified that Jah Oil Company had paid its fine in contrast to the report of the Finance and Public Accounts Committee (FPAC) of the National Assembly.

Mr. Jobe was quick to dismiss the claim made by FPAC in its report that urged PURA to fine Jah Oil Company over so-called "willful non–compliance" with regulations.

Speaking during the presentation of PURA annual activities and financial reports before FPAC on Tuesday 24 Oct. 2023, Mr. Jobe stated that the report before the FPAC was an outdated report, citing that FPAC should have contacted PURA for further verification.

The chairman of FPAC, Alhagie Darboe, also shed light on the matter, explaining that the FPAC acted based on the report presented before it.

In his statement during presenting the PURA annual reports - activity and financial statement for 2021, DG Jobe said the growth of the ICT and Energy sectors in The Gambia continued its upward trend.

"The growth in the ICT sector is attributed to the increased uptake of ICT service marked by increased mobile telephony, Internet, and money subscriptions with that of the energy sector. It is due to the expansion of the power supply to the ever-increasing customer base and increasing urbanisation."

According to DG Jobe,  to enhance the quality of service, inspection was conducted on increased operators to assess the level of compliance and implement remedial and enforcement actions.

Also the Authority disseminated consumer advisory information, including campaign brochures, during consumer education outreach activities, corporate events, and licenses forums advisory information was also shared through the Authority's website and social media platforms", he said.

He added that to safeguard the interest of consumers in the ICT and Energy sectors, the Authority handled consumer complaints and inquiries diligently and speedily. This involved resolution of various complaints relating to service providers by licenses as well as attending inquiries on various ICT issues.

Delivering his statement, Board chairman of PURA, Alieu Ngum, said the PURA annual report for 2021 showcased the significant accomplishment and the strategic steps taken in pursuit of its mission and vision to foster a digitally transformed nation and elevate ICT and energy service delivery. "The achievements detailed in this report are a testament to our unwavering commitment to realising the goals set out in our strategic objectives."
