Bekai Njie, the editor-in-chief of The Point Newspaper, has completed Managing Conflict training – a course designed for selected 15 newsroom leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa.

The training, which ended on 17 November 2023, was held at the Graduate School of Media and Communications at the Aga Khan University in Nairobi, Kenya.

Managing Conflict in Today’s Newsroom was a five-day programme bankrolled by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Media Africa in partnership with the Graduate School of Media and Communications at the Aga Khan University.

The course was aimed at equipping news managers with the skills to resolve workplace conflict and disagreement effectively.

Participants were exposed with varieties of topic such as; issues in media management in sub-Saharan Africa and how they contribute to workplace conflict; contextualising today’s newsroom environment; ethical dilemmas and resource management for today’s journalist; management in sub-Saharan Africa and how they contribute to workplace conflict; mental health for journalists and management in sub-Saharan Africa and how they contribute to workplace conflict among a host of topics.

“The course was conducted in such a way that after completion, a newsroom manager would have the skills to effectively deal with conflict of all kinds,” Editor Njie said.

“Conflict is everywhere and every leader is bound to face it,” he added. “But only leaders who deal with it reasonably and justly would most likely turn it successfully to an opportunity and move on.”

He pointed out that a leader while dealing with conflicts must demonstrate patience, fairness and professionalism as a way to move forward.
