The Department of Physical Planning, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), yesterday conducted a demolition exercise that earmarked structures built on the Ebo Town Badala wetlands.

The bulldozing of several structures built on the wetlands, with most structures being new and already at advanced stages of construction, was held with police presence.

The vice chairperson of the Ebo Town/New Jeshwang Ward Development Committee, Alagie Jobe, facing journalists, expressed satisfaction with the demolition, saying building of structures on the wetlands is a matter over which they have been raising alarm for a very long time.

"We wrote to the authorities, up to the level of the Ministry [of Local Government and Lands]," he said, adding that it is fulfilling to see that their concern is being addressed.

He stated that the Alkalos themselves have denied ever selling plots in that area to people.

Mr Jobe noted that the issues surrounding sales would be established, as the Minister for Lands has promised to ensure the matter is looked into to establish who are selling those lands.

"These houses built here have always obstructed the flowing water, which goes into houses and compounds, causing a lot of destruction," he said, lamenting the devastating consequences of building on the wetlands.

Mr Jobe confirmed the demotion is in two phases, with yesterday's demolition serving as the first part.
