Mbye Gaye, National People's Party (NPP) Regional Chairman for Banjul has denied allegations of corruption by party supporters.

Mr. Gaye is accused by NPP supporters of misusing money given to them by President Adama Barrow for victory celebration.

According to a source who spoke to our reporter on the condition of anonymity, President Barrow gave D2 million to his supporters in Banjul for their celebration but the money was “mismanaged” by the chairman and his executives without tangible reasons.

The source added that the problem of corruption is systemic and not individual.

“These asymmetries promote a corrupt behaviour "like speed money." Nepotism and bribery have become the rule instead of the exception. Corruption is so embedded in our society that it has become the normal and a regular thing to do,” he claimed.

He explained that supporters confronted Mr. Gaye about the money and he said the remaining balance is fifty thousand dalasis (50,000) which will not be enough for victory celebration.

This medium visited Mr. Gaye at his office in Banjul for his reaction but he denied the allegation against him.

According to Mr. Gaye, President Barrow gave all regional chairpersons in the country money for campaigns within their respective regions and not for victory celebration.

He added that James F. Gomez, minister of Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly Matters was always present during their meetings to advise them on how to use the money for transparency and accountability purposes.

He also said that the money was shared fairly among regional chairpersons across the country as directed by Barrow, adding that the money was also used for its intended purpose.

He added that part of the money he received was given to women groups’ (kafos) in Banjul as part of their mobilisation package.

“We organised hunting carnivals while campaigning for President Barrow and also organised political rallies in order to sell Barrow’s agenda” he said further.

The NPP Banjul chairman said they recorded all their money transactions.
