British barrister Martin Hackett, newly appointed Special Prosecutor for Jammeh-era crimes, is already in Banjul, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Attorney General Dawda A. Jallow announced Hackett’s appointment on Wednesday 8 April 2026. The four-year term officially commences in April 2026.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Hackett arrived in the country ahead of initial meetings with officials from the Ministry of Justice and the Special Prosecutor’s Office.

Hackett will head investigations and prosecutions of crimes against humanity allegedly committed between July 1994 and January 2017, as recommended by the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission.
