NAWEC to upgrade all electricity meters

The National Water and Electricity Company Ltd. (NAWEC) announced it is upgrading all electricity meters starting with the company's staff through a Token Identifier (TID).

TID ROLLOVER is an update on all prepayment meters across the world in every 30 years which Gambia is not an exception.

The programme runs through November 2024.

The first exercise is only for the staff and then be rolled out to the public in various regions

The Token Identifier is a 24-bit field, contained in STS compliant tokens, that identifies the date and time of the token generation. It is used to determine if a token has already been used in a payment meter. The TID represents the number of minutes elapsed since the base date of 1st January 1993. The incrementing of the 24-bit field means that at some point in time, the TID value will roll over to a zero value.

“It is a simple process that requires no stress; all we ask you to do is to upgrade your meters,” Managing Director Nani Juwara said yesterday at a press briefing at NAWEC’s Head Office.

“The tokens that have been used now will be upgraded by our pending system and could not be accepted by our meters before the 24th of November 2024.”

This gives utilities and municipalities a tight 14-month window to make sure they're fully prepared to meet the deadline for implementing their TID Rollover on November 24, 2024.
