The National Youth Parliament, one of the country’s most robust advocacy networks that discusses youth matters, starts sitting today to mark the opening of the first ordinary session for 2023.

Sittings are projected to attract heated debates, tough discussions and truly interactive engagements on youth matters by the young advocators from different parts of the country and with diverse cultural backgrounds.

Of late, in anticipation of this important national engagement, members of the NYP held consultations with residents of their various constituencies.

Among those who carried out the task are the representatives of Niamina West (Amat Mbaye), Lower Niumi (Fatou Ndure), Jarra West, Jokadu, Kombo South, Sami, Sabach Sanjal and Foni Jarrol.

The discussions were centred on pressing issues and matters of utmost concern to constituents. Such issues included youth unemployment, youth participation in politics, irregular migration, drug abuse, crime and decision-making processes.

The consultations by members of the non-partisan youth organisation, which seeks to empower and advance the welfare of young people in this country, was geared towards ensuring the youth representatives at the NYP better understand the plights of their fellows by directly engaging with them for and receiving recommendations from them for better representation.

Established to further youths’ welfare, the NYP engaged youths from across The Gambia to bolster awareness and build their capacities in key areas of governance, leadership and advocacy.

It has more than 60 members and they include elected regional reps and nominated members, some of whom represent marginalised members of society such as persons with disabilities.

The youth-led body envisions a Gambia where the youth effectively participate in leadership and national development.
