A man was Wednesday arraigned before Principal Magistrate Isatou Sallah Mbaye at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court for alleged assault and stealing of twenty thousand, seven hundred dalasis (D20,700).

The accused, Muhammed Jallow, a Sierra Leonean, was charged with two counts of offences - assault causing actual bodily harm and stealing contrary to section 228 and 252 of the Criminal Code Cap 10:01 Volume 3 Revised Laws of The Gambia.  He pleaded not guilty to both counts.

According to the particulars of offence, the accused, on 4 January 2024 at Senegambia, assaulted one Ebrima Njie on his right upper eyelid causing him actual bodily harm.

The offence further indicated that about the same day and location, the accused stole a Motorola mobile phone worth D15,000, and physical cash of D5,400 amounting to D20,700 belonging to the same person.

The accused stated in court that he did not steal from the complainant and he could not understand the charges read in court. He added that the complainant told him at the police station that his phone and money were stolen due to an incident. “And now he is accusing me,” the accused argued.

He was, however, granted bail of fifty thousand dalasis (D50,000) with two Gambian sureties who must be aged 25 and above. The court further stated that the accused must be present at all times in court.
The case was adjourned until 16 January 2024.
