Man arraigned for abducting underage girl in Brikama

Ismaila Sanneh, a resident of Brikama in the West Coast Region (WCR), was yesterday arraigned before Magistrate Sambou of the Brikama Magistrates’ court, charged with abducting a girl under the age of 18 years.

The accused is facing charge of abduction, contrary to section 125 of the criminal code cap 10 vol 3 revised laws of the Gambia.

When the case was call, Cadet ASP Chorr and CPL Touray announced their appearance for the IGP.

According to the particulars of offence, the accused Ismaila Sanneh, on or about the 19th day of October 2024 at Brikama, he unlawful took an unmarried girl under the age of 18 years, named (withheld) out of the custody of the girl’s parents and against their will.

When the charge was read to him in the language he understood, he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecuting team therefore sought an adjournment with a view to enable them call the first prosecuting witness.

The police prosecuting team didn’t however object to the bail of the accused on the grounds that the charge levelled against the accused is bailable. 

The presiding Magistrate accepted the prosecutor’s application and granted the accused a bail of D50,000 with one Gambian surety, who must deposit a valid ID card or passport. 

The case was adjourned till 31 December 2024 for the prosecution to call their first witness.
