Guinean faces rape charge

A Guinean national was on the 21st July, 2025, brought before Principal Magistrate Isatou Sallah-M’bai of the Kanifing Magistrates’ court and charged with rape contrary to Section 3 ( 2 ) ( g ) of the Sexual Offences Act 2015, punishable under Section 4 ( a ) ( I ) of the Sexual Offences Act 2013.

Prosecutors alleged that Dawda Barry, in the year 2025, at New Jeshwang, in the Kanifing Municipality and diverse places within the Republic of The Gambia, under coercive circumstance, raped a 14-year-old girl.

He pleaded guilty. The prosecuting officer, ASP Badjie, read the facts to the court which the accused accepted as narrated.

He was subsequently remanded at Mile 2 Prison, pending his sentencing.

In another development on the same day, in the same courtroom, before the same magistrate, Cadet Inspector Jammeh presented a charge sheet in which Abdou Wahab Hydara was also charged with rape contrary to Section 3 ( 1 ) ( a ) and 3 ( 2 ) ( d ) of the Sexual Offences Act 2013, punishable under Section 4 ( 1 ) ( a ) ( iii ) ( bb ) of the Sexual Offences Act 2013.

The accused was alleged to have on the 13th day of July, 2025, at Serrekunda London Corner, in the Kanifing Municipality of the Republic of The Gambia, raped under coercive circumstance a two-year-old girl by inserting his finger into her private part.

Cadet Inspector Jammeh then made an application for the case to be transferred to the Special Criminal Division of the High Court pursuant to Section 72 of the Criminal Procedure Act 2025.

His application was granted by the court and the accused was remanded, pending the hearing of the case at the High Court.
