The Board chair of the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA), Madam Lucy Fye Jagne, has challenged the staff of the institution to highly protect the assets and image of GRA.

She made this call and gave the advice during the recently concluded GRA Board tour across the country.  The delegation was led by the GRA Board chair and accompanied by its members and top management.

According to her, GRA is a highly reputable institution in The Gambia, hence there is need to protect the image of the institution.  She also reminded the provincial GRA staff that IMF had identified GRA as the “leading revenue collector in Africa” and with such a development, “the image of GRA cannot be compromised”.

She also commended the leadership of GRA for the commitment, dedication and motivation to GRA staff to enable them effectively and efficiently deliver their duties and functions to expectations.

She added that despite the fact that Government through the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs has increased annual revenue target, GRA would continue to perform relatively well in achieving its set target over the years.

Also speaking in a similar vein, the Police Commissioner Ansumana Kinteh of North Bank Region spoke on the high sense of commitment and dedication to working closely with GRA. He assured CG Darboe  that as long as he is the Police Commissioner in NBR , he would give all the necessary support to GRA,  especially at Amadlai Customs and Farafenni Border posts  to ensure smooth collection of revenue for national development.

“GRA alone cannot do it all; therefore, there must be collective efforts in complementing each other’s roles in nation building,” he stressed.

Speaking during the last joint meeting with sister security agencies and customs, as well as district Authority, held at the Basse Customs post, Alhagie Jallow, director of tax directorate at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, on behalf of the minister of finance commended GRA for a job well done in collecting the much-needed revenue for national development.

“Therefore, I must say bravo to the staff of GRA through the Commissioner General for maintaining its spirit in mobilising revenue to boost the economy of the country through taxation,” he said.

Mr Jallow mentioned issues affecting The Gambia and the work of GRA. He said GRA is operating in a very difficult environment among which  is   the large informal sector, which needs to be properly and tactfully handled.
