Capacity-building initiatives will remain central to her administration’s agenda, including specialised training for journalists to enhance their knowledge and professionalism. She stressed adherence to the journalists’ code of conduct and ethical practices through continuous education and skills development.
To strengthen the GPU Secretariat, Keita proposed conducting a comprehensive capacity assessment to identify gaps and provide necessary professional development. She also pledged to establish a fundraising committee to mobilise funds critical for GPU’s sustainability.
Her administration plans to review the current GPU strategic plan to align it with current realities and ensure its objectives are specific, measurable, and time-bound. To boost financial sustainability, she called for improved membership fee collection through online registration and payment options on the GPU website. She also advocated for employers to include membership fee payments in journalists’ contracts.
Addressing the challenges faced by the Media Council of The Gambia (MCG), Keita revealed plans to collaborate with its board to appoint a new Executive Secretary and secure funding for its sustainability.
Finally, she underscored the importance of engaging veteran journalists to provide mentorship and guidance, ensuring the union meets the evolving needs of the Gambian media sector.
