GPF dismisses 2, investigates 9 gov’t institutions

Seedy Muctar Touray, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has disclosed in an interview with West Coast Radio’s Peter Gomez during Coffee Time the dismissal of two of its officers for gross misconduct from the Gambia Police Force (GPF).

Meanwhile, IGP Touray also gave an update on case of nine government institutions under investigation including the discovery of unburned cocaine block which he said is concluded and sent to the Office of the Solicitor General for legal advice.

The misconduct incident, which occurred on Thursday, November 28, 2024 , sparked outrage among the public and raised serious concerns about police conduct after being reported to the Tourism Security Unit that a couple were stripped naked and filmed by one Sergeant Gibba of the  Police Intervention Unit (PIU) under the pretext of enforcing  “decency” in a public place.

A news release from the police revealed that he allegedly recorded the incident, blackmailed the victims for monetary gain, and threatened to release the footage if his demands were not met.

The police high Command reaffirmed the GPF's commitment to maintaining high standards of professionalism and integrity.

During the interview, the IGP highlighted the ongoing efforts, significant achievements, and future vision of the police force in enhancing the welfare of citizens across The Gambia and also several key initiatives that the GPF has undertaken to improve community safety and uphold the rule of law.

Touray also gave an update on the government cases under investigation including the discovery of unburned cocaine block which he said is concluded and has been sent to the Office of the Solicitor General for legal advice. Audit investigations on Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, Banjul City Council, IEC, National Assembly Resolution on Covid-19 response phases 1 and 2 have been completed and sent to the Office of the Solicitor General.

He added that they have also dealt with the  Kerr Gallo incident where 7 contractors were electrocuted.
