Gov’t spends over D10B on poverty alleviation

Vice President Muhammad B.S Jallow yesterday informed the National Assembly Members (NAM) that the government of The Gambia under its poverty alleviation programme spent 6.4B Dalasis in 2021 and rose to D10.4B by the end of 2022 fiscal year, representing a 59% growth.

He said the spending was on a quarterly and annual basis and it was done by the Minister of finance, identifying items that were used to reduce cost for families. 

He also said that there were ongoing efforts by government to register the most vulnerable households in the country in other to develop a framework for targeted social protection intervention.

 

“We have registered about 80 thousand households and the idea is to capture the whole population in this country to identify vulnerable people and target them directly.”

He noted that the government is continuing on its effort to reduce poverty in The Gambia.
