The Managing Director of the Gambia International Airline (GIA) has stated in the presence of the Public Enterprise Committee (PEC) of the National Assembly that the airline generated a revenue or profit of D11 million in 2021.

In presenting the activity report for the year 2021 of GIA, the airline MD Numo Sanneh highlighted that the operating revenue or profit before tax in 2021 was D11 million and in the previous year, the company recorded an operating loss before tax of D8 million.

He said GIA capital investment in 2021 amounted to over hundred and thirty-five million dalasis, signifying an enormous increase of over 2,000 per cent from 2020 investment of D5.6 million.

He further highlighted the contribution of various departments to the total revenue, saying:  “Ground handling: the total revenue that was generated from ground handling was hundred and forty-five million dalasis whilst in 2020 the figure was ninety-one million dalasis, which indicates a 58 per cent rise for 2021 compared to the previous years.”

“On hajj operations due to the effect of the Covid-19 and coupled with Saudi decision to limit Hajj to only citizens and residents to prevent the spread of the virus, GIA did not engage on Hajj operations in 2021,”

“On ticket sales, the revenue generated was four hundred and seven thousand which constitute an increase of which was about a 114 percent from the previous years”

“On Cargo handling, the total revenue generated for the years under review was over D3 million and that contributed about 2 per cent to total revenue for the year under review.”

However, he said, with the effect of Covid-19, GIA witnessed a downward slide in cargo volumes due to the limit in the flight numbers that were handled at the airport.

He noted that a total of over two thousand passengers was handled at Banjul International Airport in the years under review and there was an increase compared to the previous year, which is 2020.

He clarified that GIA did not engage in direct flight operations during the year under review. “Notwithstanding, a flights operation committee was formed and are currently doing a course benefit analysis to inform management on the best approach to take when venturing into such operation,” he said.

“In the commerce department, the only revenue generated by GIA in terms of this unit was the ticket sales, the commissions from ticket sales amounted to four hundred thousand in 2021, which represented over 100 per cent rise compared to the previous year.”

He added: “GIA invested in airport plans, motor vehicles, office furniture and computers.”

He also said the operations department, which comprises grand handling, cargo, and flight operations unit, is the largest section in GIA in terms of staff numbers.
