The Gambia has benefited a substantial sum of US$40.00 million from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) to support economic growth by bolstering the country’s transport sector.

The financing serves as a milestone for Bertil Harding Highway phase 3, and to get the new flyover at Sukuta and side roads in good shape of form and effectively up and running.

The IsDB) received an official request from the Gambia government in December 2023, outlining the government's priorities for funding the transport infrastructure sector for the period 2024-2027 and requesting IsDB to finance widening of the Bertil Harding Highway Project (Phase-3).

The proposed project, which is part of the country’s Recovery Focused National Development Plan 2023-2027 (RF-NDP), aims to address traffic safety, maintenance and mobility to enhance access to commercial and residential areas.

The primary objective of this project is to improve the overall functionality of Bertil Harding Highway through the implementation of service roads equipped with essential drainage and road furniture as well as an overpass, aiming to promote mobility and safety.

The successful implementation of the service roads will boost the country’s economy and promote easy access to residential and commercial amenities.

The project is located in the Greater Banjul Area (GBA) where the road starts at the airport junction and ends at Sting Corner.

The Bertil Harding Highway crosses the settlements of Old-Yundum, Sukuta, Brusubi, Kololi, Bijilo, Senegambia, Kotu and Kanifing.

The widening of Bertil Harding Highway phase 3 will consist of paved service roads implemented parallel to the main carriage way, drainage, utilities, and road furniture.

The service roads will provide the necessary access to the highway as well as the residential and commercial interface.

The construction of an additional overpass is identified at Sukuta-Jabang location, and  primarily aimed to considerably alleviate the traffic congestion raised by the Gambian government.

This support to The Gambia has come after the Board of Executive Directors of the IsDB yesterday approved more than US$3 billion in financing for 20 socioeconomic development projects across 17 member countries.

The projects focus on advancing socioeconomic development as well as promoting resilience and sustainability in key sectors such as transport, energy, agriculture, water resources, food security, health, and social development.

The approvals came during the 357th IsDB Board meeting chaired by IsDB President, H.E. Dr Muhammad Al Jasser, on 14 October 2024.
