The driver of the vehicle has been taken to custody as investigation into the matter continues.
“I can confirm to you that there are six deaths and nine are seriously injured," senior police officer in CRR, who is familiar with the development and was contacted for comments, said.
“Most of the deceased are Madarassa students," he said, while dismissing reports that the driver was arrested by soldiers.
"The driver reported himself earlier today (yesterday) at the Firdawsi Police Station through a motorbike. Therefore, due to lack of police vehicle within that area, police decided to reach out to the army to help transport the suspect (driver) to Janjangbureh, the administrative town of CRR," our source added.
Deputy Police Spokesperson Modou Musa Sisawo confirmed the development, saying: "The tragic accident that occurred on Saturday night at Jarumeh Koto village, Central River Region, has resulted in a devastating loss of lives, with others currently receiving treatment at a health center."
"Preliminary reports indicate that the incident occurred when an unidentified vehicle collided or rammed with a celebrating football team along the highway, leading to this catastrophic event."
"The driver involved has been taken into police custody, and the case is under investigation to ascertain the details and circumstances surrounding the accident."
He added: "The tragic incident serves as a somber reminder for the public to exercise caution and vigilance while using public roads to prevent similar unfortunate occurrences."
