The spokesperson of the country’s main referral hospital, Kebba Sanneh, has commented on the transformation that is currently taking place at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH).

“There is massive physical reimbursement and the expansion of structures at the hospital with a view to meet international standards. There are a lot of infrastructural adjustments taking place at the hospital,” he said in an exclusive interview with The Point.

“The front-side of the hospital is expanded and some of the wards are also expanded. The private block is now currently under construction. We believe that this is going to be standardised to a level of a hotel so that people who could afford it can have a very comfortable resting period during the course of their treatment with the hospital.”

“There have also been unseen activities taking place at the hospital that people need to know about and that is the accreditation of some of our facilities at the hospital.”

The Laboratory of the hospital, Sanneh explains, has been accredited and the Radiologic Department has been accredited. “When we talk about accreditation, we are talking about uplifting the educational experience and the work experience of doctors who are going to be assigned to these departments, meaning they are raised to the standard of the West African College of Sciences.”

“Now professors are coming from neighbouring countries like Nigeria, Ghana and other places with a view to help, educate and teach our junior doctors in order to have that potential to be able to deliver what is necessary at that particular ward.”

“We have just recently received 41 brand new dialysis machines donated to the government. The issue of dialysis machines has been a problematic part for this institution due to the fact that so many patients have been on dialysis. The machine we had before was few. Now that we have over 40 new machines, we believe this will go a long way in enhancing the quality of services that we deliver in this institution. It would also cut time for the waiting period of patients that may need the dialysis machine.”

Challenges of the hospital

Like many institutions and communities in the country, the issue of electricity and water shortage, he said, is among the challenges they encounter at the hospital.

“We do encounter electricity problems which are nationwide and sometimes water problems which are a national problem. So what is experienced outside is what is experienced here when it comes to electricity and water supply. However, we are trying in our own ways to address this,” he concluded.
