Dawda Sanyang, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Drug Law Enforcement Agency of the Gambia (DLEAG), has confirmed the arrest of 26-year-old Bintou Jallow, a housewife and resident of Bundung, who was arrested at Mile II Central Prison in Banjul on 16 March this year with some substance of suspected cannabis sativa, 2 pieces of suspected cannabis resin and 2 tablets of Clonazepam.

He said a woman, identified as Binta Jallow, has been arrested at Mile 2 Central Prison after prison officers allegedly discovered suspected drugs hidden in food she brought for an inmate.

He noted that during the inspection, officers reportedly found a plastic bag containing suspected cannabis and pills concealed inside a food container. The substances were immediately classified as prohibited items.

Mr Sanyang explained that the lady Jallow was arrested at the scene and subsequently handed over to the Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation. Officials say she is likely to face charges under the country’s drug laws.

He mentioned that the prison authorities, in collaboration with the Drug Law Enforcement Agency, reaffirmed their commitment to combating drug trafficking within correctional facilities. They also warn the public that attempt to smuggle banned items into prisons is a serious offence punishable by law.
