CPA condemns use of children in protests at Bakoteh Dumpsite

Nov 12, 2025, 11:10 AM

Press release

The Child Protection Alliance (CPA) is sickened and deeply troubled to learn that children were involved in a protest at the Bakoteh dumpsite earlier today.

While every individual has the right to express frustrations and demand better living conditions, it is completely unacceptable for children to be used or encouraged to participate in protests, especially in such a hazardous and toxic environment.

The dumpsite is filled with toxic fumes, sharp waste, and heavy machinery that pose serious and immediate dangers to life and health. No child should ever be near such risks, let alone placed at the frontline of a protest. This act endangers children’s lives and violates national child protection laws as well as our shared moral values and community responsibilities.

The Child Protection Alliance calls on the Department of Social Welfare and relevant child protection authorities to urgently investigate this incident and ensure that no child is ever again exposed to harm in the name of protest or activism.

We also urge community leaders, parents, and guardians to act responsibly, to protect and guide our children, ensuring they are never used to advance any agenda that puts their safety or well-being at risk.
