The court had ordered the National Agency for Legal Aid to provide a legal representative for the accused Arona Tine, who is charged with murder.

The accused has confirmed before Justice E. Jaiteh of the Banjul High Court that he could not secure a lawyer for his trial.

It would be recalled that the presiding judge told the accused that he was charged with a “very serious crime” and that he could not proceed without a legal representation.

The accused, Arona Tine, admitted talking to a lawyer for his trial and the court granted him a week for him to return to court with his lawyer but yesterday, Tine stated that he could not secure a lawyer.

Justice Jaiteh also stated that if the accused could not secure a lawyer, the state could provide a legal representative.

It would be recalled that the accused on 19 January 2024 at Westfield allegedly stabbed one Fatoumatta Kargbo in the chest with a knife which resulted in her death.

The accused was formally charged with murder contrary to Section 187 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The case was adjourned until 22 April 2024.
