President Barrow made the remarks while receiving a delegation of Islamic leaders, including members of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council, regional imams and other prominent religious figures from the West Coast Region, Kanifing Municipality and Banjul.
The meeting, described as the first gathering of its kind since 1981, sought to strengthen unity among Islamic leaders and explore ways of promoting peace, tranquillity and national cohesion as the country prepares for future electoral processes and development initiatives.
Addressing the gathering, President Barrow commended the religious leaders for demonstrating unity and a shared commitment to the welfare of the nation, noting that their influence continues to play a critical role in shaping values and fostering social harmony.
The President emphasised that peace and stability remain the foundation upon which national development is built, adding that religious leaders have a unique responsibility to guide their communities towards tolerance, understanding and mutual respect.
He reaffirmed his government's commitment to preserving the peace and stability that The Gambia has enjoyed over the years, while stressing that collaboration between government and religious leaders remains essential in maintaining national unity.
"Religious leaders have a vital responsibility in safeguarding our nation's peace and unity. Your guidance and counsel continue to inspire communities and strengthen the values that bind us together as a people," President Barrow told the gathering.
He further urged Islamic scholars and clerics to continue preaching messages of peace, reconciliation and coexistence, particularly at a time when political activities are gaining momentum across the country.
Several imams and religious representatives who spoke during the meeting echoed the President's sentiments, underscoring the moral and spiritual obligation of religious leaders to help prevent division and promote peaceful coexistence among Gambians.
Speaking on behalf of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council, its President, Sheikh Essa Darboe, highlighted the need for continued unity within the Muslim community and reaffirmed the commitment of religious leaders to supporting peace and stability in the country.
He observed that preserving peace is a collective responsibility and called on all Gambians to remain guided by the principles of tolerance, dialogue and mutual respect.
For his part, Hamat Bah, Minister of Lands, Regional Government and Religious Affairs, urged imams and religious leaders to continue praying for peace, unity and tranquillity in The Gambia.
He assured the gathering of government's readiness to strengthen collaboration with religious leaders in promoting harmony and peaceful coexistence across the country.
"The partnership between government and religious leaders remains crucial in ensuring that our nation continues to enjoy peace and stability," Minister Bah stated.
The meeting was chaired by Imam Basiru Drammeh of Latrikunda, while Alhajie Bai Secka, Bilal of Banjul, delivered the vote of thanks.
Representatives of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council, RAWDA, Ahmadiyya Jama'at and several other Islamic organisations attended the meeting, where participants collectively renewed their commitment to preserving peace, strengthening unity and promoting religious harmony throughout The Gambia.
The gathering concluded with prayers for continued peace, stability and prosperity, as religious leaders reaffirmed their determination to work together in safeguarding the country's long-standing tradition of peaceful coexistence.
