Sambou Kinteh, Senior Climate Change Officer at the National Climate Secretariat, has said there are projections indicating that “Banjul is vulnerable to flooding”.

The senior climate officer made this statement recently in an interview with this reporter on climate crisis and sustainability.

The Secretariat was established in 2016 through a policy recommendation and this policy is referred to as National Climate Change Policy.

With one meter sea level rise, the whole capital city will be flooded, Mr Kinteh said, adding that this is based on the projections, articles of which are available. “So it means government has to look at relevant policies that would address those problems, and in addressing those problems, we are expecting that the component of sustainability will have to come in the development of those policies,” he advised.

Talking about what is in the offing in trying to address the challenge, the climate change officer said: “As a ministry, we think of mainstreaming and integrating climate change into both national and sectoral policies. So these are things that we are trying to come up with as a ministry and we have developed what we called a long-term strategy in addressing climate issues in The Gambia.

“So we decided to prioritize some of our intervention areas with a view to addressing climate issues from different sectors.”
