Upon receiving the file, Hon. Justice Jobarteh set a date for the mention of the case before her for 24 June 2026.
The accused, Mamadou Jallow, initially appeared before Principal Magistrate Sallah Mbye of the Kanifing Magistrates' Court on 16 June 2026, facing a single count of murder, contrary to section 155 of the Criminal Offences Act 2025.
The police alleged that on 15 June 2026, at Fajara, the accused, Mamadou Jallow stabbed Ba Yunusa Mbye with a bottle in his neck, causing his death.
Principal Magistrate Sallah Mbye then transferred the case to the Special Criminal Division of the High Court for lack of Jurisdiction to hear and determine the case. She further ordered that Jallow be remanded at the Mile Two Central Prison pending the mention of the case at the High Court.
On 16 June, the late Yunusa Mbye was laid to rest in his native village of Bansang, a funeral attended by hundreds of his relatives, natives of Bansang, friends, and colleagues at the University of The Gambia.
On 17 June 2026, the Gambia Police Force announced that, as part of ongoing investigative efforts, a post-mortem examination was conducted on the deceased and relevant evidentiary materials had been secured.
The accused, Mamadou Jallow, according to the police, is a Guinean national resident in Fajara.
Police said preliminary investigations indicated that the incident followed an altercation between the deceased and the accused Mamadou Jallow, during which the victim sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.
Police said Crime Scene Investigators and officers of the Criminal Investigation Department visited the scene and recovered items considered relevant to the investigation.
Hon. Justice Sidi K. Jobarteh of the Special Criminal Division of the High Court will hear and determine the case starting 24 June 2026.
