In a historic breakthrough for The Gambia’s financial sector, Managing Director of Agib Bank, Isatou Jawara, has been unanimously elected Vice President 2 of the West African Bankers Association (WABA), becoming the first Gambian to hold the prestigious position.

Her election took place during the 79th Executive Council Meeting and 43rd General Assembly of WABA held in Monrovia, Liberia, where banking leaders from across the sub-region gathered to discuss the future of the financial industry in West Africa.

The landmark appointment is being hailed as a major achievement for The Gambia’s banking sector and a strong recognition of Gambian leadership within the regional financial landscape.

Industry stakeholders have described Madam Jawara’s elevation as a proud moment for the country, noting that it reflects the increasing influence and credibility of Gambian professionals in regional and international institutions.

Her appointment is also seen as recognition of her leadership, expertise and contribution to strengthening banking standards and promoting financial inclusion in the sub-region.

Under her leadership at Agib Bank, the institution has continued to expand its footprint in The Gambia’s financial sector, playing a growing role in supporting economic growth, innovation and access to banking services.

Observers say her election to the WABA leadership is expected to create new opportunities for regional collaboration and enhance The Gambia’s participation in shaping banking policies and financial sector reforms across West Africa.

The West African Bankers Association serves as a key regional platform that brings together banking institutions and financial leaders to promote cooperation, professional development and stronger banking systems within the ECOWAS region.

Madam Jawara’s historic appointment is being viewed as another significant step in advancing female leadership in the banking industry and strengthening The Gambia’s presence in regional decision-making bodies.
