The Gambia’s Drug Law Enforcement Agency (DLEAG) arrested 21 people, including a Canadian, a Senegalese, and a Gambian woman caught with nearly 1,000 ecstasy pills at Barra Ferry Terminal.
Between 29th August and 4th September 2025, the Agency recorded 20 drug-related cases. Nineteen Gambians, one Senegalese, and one Canadian were taken into custody during a series of operations across the country.

The Senegalese suspect was arrested in Brikama Kaira Kunda alongside a Gambian national for joint possession of three bundles of cannabis sativa. Meanwhile, in Brusubi, the Canadian national was caught with quantities of cocaine, underscoring how the drug trade is drawing in both local and foreign actors.

DLEAG officers confiscated a wide range of drugs during the week, including: Cannabis sativa: 31 bundles, 10 parcels, 156 wraps & other quantities, Hashish (cannabis resin): 18 pieces, Skunk cannabis: 23 pieces, Kush: 2 medical plastics & 65 wraps, Ecstasy: 1,982 tablets and Cocaine: 4 pellets & other quantities.

DLEAG filed five new drug possession cases, all under Section 35 of the Drug Control Act, 2003. At the same time, the courts handed down five convictions: one for possession and four for trafficking.

Four of the rulings came from the Brikama Magistrates’ Court, while the Essau Magistrates’ Court decided the remaining case.

The Agency also pushed prevention efforts. Radio discussions on GRTS, Al-Falaq FM, and Paradise Farafenni FM tackled the dangers of drug abuse. In addition, DLEAG trained members of the Arts Academy to strengthen community outreach and drug awareness campaigns.
