Despite its importance in the country's development, the sector continues to face numerous challenges and it is one area that has been neglected for far too long.
It is a fact The Gambia has abundant talented youngsters, whose ingenuity and talents, if harnessed, can transform the country's handicraft narratives.
This sector offers an opportunity not only to preserve the country’s rich cultural heritage, but also to play a major role in reviving the economy while creating millions of jobs.
Studies revealed that more than half of the world's population contributes significantly to economic activity, growth, and well-being. Women empowerment is not only economic and social empowerment, but supporting them to make decisions and amplify their voices.
It is in the news in our Tuesday’s edition of The Point, that a young Gambian entrepreneur, Jarga is about to redefine Africa’s fashion industry with the launch of its new brand being The Gambia’s first luxury handbag brand recently.
Jarga, through her latest brand- Bajen Bag Collection, is said to be the first locally designed and handcrafted luxury handbag line in the country.
Women involvement in economic activities can promote economic development and gender empowerment. It is said that when women are empowered, the communities thrive and this could have trickle-down effects on their earnings.
It is high time, government to start putting in measures to implement policies that provide financial incentives to artisans and craft entrepreneurs. This could even include tax breaks, grants and soft loans to support the production and marketing of crafts.
Also, this will enable stakeholders in the country’s handicraft industry to compete globally with their colleagues, while exposing their talents on a wider spectrum.
Another way of motivating them is organizing training in modern design techniques, quality control and marketing to export their skills.
Also, the government should invest in establishing craft training centres across the country to ensure that artisans are equipped with the necessary skills to innovate while preserving traditional methods.
With the much-need support from government and other stakeholders, the country’s handicraft stakeholders stand a better chance to excel in their respective areas, thus promoting the image of The Gambia on a larger-than-life scale.
Let’s put at the back of mind that local handicraft is one of the surest ways to increase tourist arrivals in any given country. Thus, let’s promote our stakeholders in the handicraft sector.
