On Gambia-Bangladesh joint peacekeeping mission

Jun 15, 2023, 11:19 AM

Peacekeeping mission is an important undertaking as the world of politics evolves. Around the globe the continued civil unrest, looming conflicts and other civil strife have increased the need for multinational contingents to join forces to ensure law and order.

We all know that peace is precious and without it the world would be a worst wild zone for mankind.

For several decades some regions around the globe have been grappling with struggles of unrest that require urgent actions.

Therefore, peacekeeping is a noble endeavour and a profession that makes a great difference in the lives of millions, especially the most vulnerable.

It is an undisputed fact that The Gambia has been a consistent contributor to peacekeeping missions for several decades.

In most of these international peacekeeping duties, our contingent has excelled much to the admiration of all. The professionalism and determination exhibited by the Gambian contingents is always unquestionable. So we commend the Army High Command for inculcating self-discipline in our gallant men and women. It would have been difficult to maintain such a professional and moral feat without the support of GAF High Command in the past peacekeeping missions.

In our yesterday's edition of The Point, we reported that the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has signed a memorandum of understanding to join a co-deployment with Bangladesh.  This was according to Chief of Defence Staff Lt. General Yankuba A. Drammeh.

However, this development is the first of its kind since the formation of the United Nations, the African Union and ECOWAS for the two countries to work as partners under one umbrella for the promotion and maintenance of global peace.

What is unique about the Gambian contingents, apart from being trained in all aspects of skills needed and required, is their ability to live and work harmoniously with host countries.

However, Bangladesh is said to be the largest contributing country when it comes to the United Nations peace mission. Therefore, this mission would no doubt open up new avenues and expand the skills of our men in uniform.

It must be noted that The Gambia has been taking part in the deployment of peacekeeping missions to several countries around the world. For instance, The Gambia has deployed personnel to peace operations in countries such as Liberia, Sierra Leone, Chad and Central African Republic.

And in all these zones our gallant men and women did absolutely well in their respective operations.
