The Gambia on Saturday will mark its 58th independence anniversary since attaining nationhood.  It was on the 18th of February 1965, when the country broke the Yoke of colonial rule from the British.

The day, therefore, should hold a national pride and honour in the hearts of every Gambian, as on it was on this day the country attained its full sovereignty.

Independence Day is significant as it commemorates the valour and spirit of the freedom fighters, who fought for the independence of the nation. However, the country’s road to independence has not been an easy one just like most African countries.

We hereby paid glowing tribute to the likes of Sir Farimang Singhateh, I.M. Garba Jahumpa, P.S. Njie, Sir Dawda Jawara and all those, who put their lives on the line to make sure that the country attains its independence.  These aforementioned personalities (May their souls continue to rest in peace) have worked tirelessly to ensure the Gambia attained its independence.

Fifty-years 58 years on today, the Gambia has undergone some interesting remarkable political dispensation from democratic to authoritarian and back to democratic rule.

Around the globe, there are certain indicators to measure the progress or development of nations that have rapidly developed since attaining independence to date. These indicators help gauge the strength of a nation and decide if it has or is on the right track in terms of policies and fighting corruption and ensuring human rights and rule of law.

Meanwhile, the current government has embarked on some ambitious reformed programmes, for which we commend the government for its foresight. However, the country has a long way to go in fighting corruption, and nepotism in government. Let us inculcate unity, peace and a sense of tolerance. Above all, let’s see the country first and work towards its greater development.

People should always remember that governments come and go, but the Gambia remains. This assertion is a food for thought; and a taste case we should all learn from.

Going forward, celebrating independence anniversary should therefore be a moment to reflect on how far we have come as a country, by reflecting on the challenges and the way forward.

As we celebrate the country’s 58th independence anniversary, we should set a resolution that we intend to achieve. Let us work towards positioning and transforming the country to the envy of the world.

It is a fact that we must have different ideologies, or belong to different political parties, but let’s always remind ourselves that division will not take us anywhere, only backwardness and under-development.  Happy and joyous independence anniversary to you in advance.
