GOOD MORNING MR PRESIDENT: Security and National Accolades

Feb 5, 2024, 10:18 AM

Mr President, there is a need for proper security to be put in place within and at the borders of the country, particularly with Senegal.

We as a country should be mindful of the fact our borders are porous and also our neighbours Senegal have postponed their presidential elections, initially scheduled for 25 February, indefinitely.

Mr President, looking at the political development in Senegal, we should pay keen attention to the situation in order to avert any suspicious cross-border movements or activities.

This because The Gambia and Senegal are close neighbours. And anything that happens in Senegal could affect The Gambia, more so with the political situation unfolding there. We should therefore pray for peace and stability to reign in both countries.

In addition to that, the security situation in the sub-region is volatile, as the region is still confronted with the activities of jihadists.

So both The Gambia and Senegal, who are condemned to live together, should collaborate to beef up security on our borders.

Again, Mr President, another very important aspect is the upcoming OIC summit scheduled for May 4th and 5th this year, to which 56 heads of state, kings and other leaders are expected to attend.

Security, therefore, should be paramount as we must not rest on our laurels. We should continue to be vigilant to ensure the safety and security of our guests who are coming from different parts of the world. Peace and tranquility should be the order of the day since The Gambia is a peace-loving nation.

Furthermore, in relation to the OIC Summit, essential facilities and amenities such as water, electricity and clean environment should be ensured.

Mr President, veering onto the subject of national accolades, there is a need to revive the spirit of appreciating our good people and institutions who have contributed to the development  of the country in various ways.

Such individuals and institutions should be recognised, appreciated and awarded and not necessarily after they have passed away. We should celebrate great people when they are alive, and practise to honour them to serve as role models to the younger ones.

Mr President, to this end, a national committee should be set up to oversee the good initiative of honouring our heroes and heroines.

It will actually be remarkable to name certain places like streets, public arenas and strategic heritage of the country after some great people who are alive or gone.

Good day!
