Feb 16, 2024, 10:52 AM | Article By: EDITORIAL

The Gambia will celebrate its 59 years of nationhood on Sunday 18th February 2024.  It was on the 18th of February 1965, when the country broke the Yoke of colonial rule from the British.

The day is not only a moment to celebrate, but also a stocktaking period to reflect on those who fought during the country’s independence struggle.

The Gambia like most African nations that endured devastating experiences during colonial rule. Despite this, there are individuals who sacrificed by putting their lives on the line to ensure that the country attained its independence.

We want to pay glowing tribute to the likes of Sir Farimang Singhateh, I.M. Garba Jahumpa, P.S. Njie, Sir Dawda Jawara and all those who contributed significantly during the independence struggle.

These aforementioned personalities among others have worked tirelessly to ensure that The Gambia attained its independence.

Fast forward, as the country attains its 59th independence anniversary, we renew our call for all to unite and work towards nation building.

Let’s put aside our political differences and see the interest of the country first. It is a fact that in any vibrant democracy, people must learn and accept criticism, especially on issues that have to do with our national development programmes and advise the government in that regard.

However, people must also acknowledge and commended the government for the achievements it has registered and work towards building a greater nation.

This reminds us of the popular adage that nation building calls for selfless sacrifice and dedication of all. Rome was built by none, but the Romans.

Let's not expect foreigners to come and develop our country for us. As Gambians, we have to take the lead in transforming this country to envy of the world.

It will not be an easy task, but if we collectively work together, success is attainable.

We must also remember that governments come and go, but the Gambia is here to stay.

To this end, we applaud the current government for the numerous programmes it has undertaken since 2017. Some of the projects are there for all to see.

Notwithstanding, there is need for stringent anti-corruption campaigns and punish those found wanting. Government should also make sure that vices that are inimical to our progress are confronted with the seriousness it deserves.

In this new Gambia, there is no room for nepotism, tribalism or inter-religious differences.

Therefore, let’s all unite under one banner and work for a greater nation.

Long life The Gambia!
