In our Wednesday’s edition, we ran a story in which the government of The Gambia through the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy (MoCDE) in partnership with the University of The Gambia (UTG) is working on implementing a technology hub. This initiative will be extended across three regions of the country.
This was disclosed by Seedy Keita, Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, while delivering the 2024 budget at the National Assembly. This will be an offshoot of research and innovation for employment creation and local development in ICTs. This is great news in view of the fact that the country is fast catching up and exploiting this technological evolution.
However, another important area captured in the 2024 budget is the effort to revitalise and reposition GAMTEL/GAMCEL. Some would attest to the fact that Gamtel in the past used to be one of the most successful and vibrant parastatals in the sub-region. This is in view of its sound and vibrant approach in ensuring efficiency and effective telecommunication in the country.
This plan includes supporting GAMTEL’s network upgrade and expansion initiatives geared towards enhancing inclusivity, providing adequate redundancy, and building resilience. Effective communication and inter-connectivity plays an important role in this day and age. Digital transformation the world is going through is enormous and people have unlimited opportunities to exploit these benefits.
With this revitalization in the offing, users will have an opportunity to go about their business, thereby addressing network interruptions caused by frequent cuts on the national fibre backbone.
