The new Senegalese President Macky Sall has pardoned 1,009 convicts who were incarcerated for various offenses in different prisons across the country, the Senegalese news agency (APS) reported Tuesday.

According to the APS, the decision taken Monday following a presidential decree is in the spirit of Senegal’s 52nd independence anniversary on 4 April.

The head of state expressed his commitment to human dignity and said his pardon was meant to offer an opportunity to a category of citizens who once had a brush with the law.
