The National Youth Association for Food Security (NaYAFS) recently completed a nationwide food assessment programme.
The assessment, carried out in all the divisions and districts in the Gambia, covered over 1152 households nationwide and three villages in a district with 8 samples in a village.
Speaking to the Point after the completion of the programme, the Director of NaYAFS, Mr. Alhagie Kebbeh said that the assessment was done to ascertain the level of food security in the Gambia. He said it will also help to know the state of farming in the Gambia.
According to Mr. Alhagie Kebbeh, food is a right that nobody should be deprived of. "Every body has a right to food and nobody should be deprived from food. It is a fundamental human rights of every individual to have food and means of getting food", said Mr. Kebbeh.
The NaYAFS Director called on Gambians to grow food stuffs to reduce the number of imported food stuffs in the Gambia. This, he said, is the only way to food self-sufficiency in the Gambia. He also called on businesspeople to invest in farming to support in the attainment of food-sufficiency.
