An early first-half goal from Gambian international productive forward, Assan Jatta, could do little to rescue his Mariekerke side from conceding their fifth straight defeat of the season in the Belgian third tier league.

The 24-year-old Jatta and his Mariekerke side succumbed to a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of Dilbeek on Sunday.

Bierhoff, as he is affectionately called, was denied what looked like a clear penalty as he went  down twice following two hefty challenges from Dilbeek defenders, but the central referee was in no mood to award the home team a spot kick.

Although Jatta netted the first goal of the game in the 10th minute after been set-up by the team captain Fabio, a Brazilian national who also plays at the heart of Mariekerke’s midfield, but his effort was not good enough to earn Mariekerke a happy moment.

The defeat has confirmed Mariekerke’s fifth straight setback in as many matches and they are struggling at the demotion zone with only four points in seven league matches.

Next for the former Steve Biko captain is another crucial game when they travel to face Sint-Gillis Wass on Sunday.
