Eight employees seek court redress

Foday Lunbang Jarju and seven others on Monday slammed their former employer (Sun Beach Hotel) with a law suit over wrongful termination of their services before the Industrial Tribunal.

The plaintiffs are claiming D133,332 being payment of notice of termination of employment, payment of leave due and unpaid other terminal benefits, as well as unpaid twelve months’ salary of one of the plaintiffs.

Alternately, the plaintiffs also claimed redundancy payment and notice due and not paid, general damages for statutory breach of contract between the defendant and the plaintiffs.

The plaintiffs further claimed an interest on the amount found due at such rate and for such period as the tribunal deemed fit and cost.

However, Foday Lubang Jarju alone claimed D19,200, Eliman Manneh claimed D12,948, while Sulayman Sowe also claimed D11,544, Foday Sanyang claimed D12,700 and Ramou Demba claimed D14,700.

Sainabou Jarju, Jainaba Barry and Fatoumatta Sowe were each claiming D8,580.

The particulars further claimed that from 2002 to 2010 they were employed in capacities ranging from drivers to waitresses, and housekeepers among others.

The plaintiffs were represented by the Gambia Transport Agricultural Food and Industrial Workers’ Union.
