Czech Bikes for Gambian Schools, a charitable organization based in Czech Republic, on 21 March 2013, donated three hundred and fifty-one bicycles to four schools in the country.
The beneficiaries are Omar Bunjeng Islamic School in Gunjur, Essau Senior Secondary School, Pirang Upper Basic and Senior Secondary and Konting Upper Basic School.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony held in Gunjur, Czech Bikes for Gambian Schools country director Fabakary Boyo Touray said this was the first time an organization had donated bicycles of this amount to Gambian schools.
It all geared towards the attainment of quality education as well as increasing school enrollment, he said.
Mr Touray said further that Czech Bikes for Gambian Schools is following the footstep of Jole Rider, who has donated thousands of bicycles to Gambian schools.
He expressed Czech Bikes’ readiness to supporting Gambian schools with bicycles to make education accessible to Gambians.
Ebrima Touray, secretary to the board of trustee of Czech Bikes for Gambian Schools, said the donation of the bicycles to four schools was the first of its kind by his organization.
He said their aim is to boost access to quality education in the country.
Roman Posolda, director of Czech Bikes for Gambian Schools, expressed delight at presenting the bicycles to the schools, saying the bikes were donated by people of Czech Republic.
Posolda expressed his organization’s willingness to continue assisting Gambian schools with bikes to make education accessible to Gambian children.
Speaking on behalf of the Alkalo of Gunjur, Omar Chaw Barrow, applauded the donors for supporting Gambian schools with bikes, saying they will really aid the students’ going to schools.
Barrow also thanked Fabakary Touray, country director for Czech Bikes for Gambian Schools, for his tremendous contribution towards the development of the country, especially in education.
He also advised the beneficiary schools to make best use of the donated items.
The Chief of Kombo South, Alhagie Mustapha Touray, hailed the donors for their benevolent gesture.
The deputy governor of West Coast Region, Fatou Sanyang, in her remarks, said the gesture was a great achievement in the development of the country.
She therefore seized the opportunity to thank the donors for the gesture.
Madam Sanyang also advised the beneficiaries to put the donated bikes in good use, saying huge amount of money had been spent on buying and bringing the bicycles to The Gambia.
